Getting Started

Beginning a Psychological Assessment

Starting psychological testing can feel overwhelming, especially if you are unsure whether an evaluation is appropriate or what the process involves. This page is designed to answer common questions and help you determine whether psychological assessment is the right next step for your needs.

My practice primarily provides psychological assessment and diagnostic evaluation for adults, including ADHD and autism assessments, as well as diagnostic clarification for complex or overlapping concerns. Therapy is offered on a limited basis and is not the primary service of the practice.

Psychological testing typically involves three separate appointments, including a comprehensive intake interview, a structured testing session lasting approximately 3–4 hours, and a feedback session to review findings and recommendations.

When psychotherapy is provided, sessions are 50 minutes unless otherwise specified.

I am currently in-network for Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO and BCBS Blue Choice.

Pre-authorization and a cost estimate will be obtained prior to any psychological testing taking place.

For out-of-network plans, I can provide you with a “superbill” (aka invoice) to submit to your insurance company for partial reimbursement. Here are some questions to ask your  insurance provider to determine your eligibility and reimbursement:

-What is my out-of-network deductible for outpatient mental health? How much of my deductible has been met this year?

-Is there a limit to how many mental health visits I may receive per calendar year?

-How do I submit claim forms for reimbursement?

FAQ

FAQ

Psychological Testing

What the Evaluation Process Involves?

Psychological testing is a multi-step process, not a single appointment. While the specifics vary by case, most evaluations include:

  1. Comprehensive clinical interview focused on current concerns, developmental history, and long-term patterns
  2. Standardized psychological and cognitive measures chosen based on the referral question
  3. Integration of findings across interview data, testing results, and clinical judgment
  4. Feedback session to review results, diagnostic impressions, and recommendations
  5. Written report designed to be clear, detailed, and clinically useful

What types of conditions do you assess?

Evaluations may address questions related to:

  • ADHD
  • Autism spectrum conditions
  • Attention and executive functioning
  • Trauma-related symptoms
  • Mood and anxiety concerns
  • Emotional regulation and personality patterns

What You Receive From Testing?

The goal of assessment is not simply to arrive at a diagnosis, but to provide clarity that is useful. Clients can expect:

  • Clear explanations of findings in understandable language
  • Thoughtful diagnostic conclusions when appropriate
  • Individualized recommendations for therapy, medication consultation, or accommodations
  • Insight into strengths, vulnerabilities, and patterns
  • Guidance that supports informed decision-making moving forward

Many clients report feeling a sense of relief and validation—not because of a label, but because their experiences finally make sense in a cohesive way.

How long does the assessment process take?

The timeline varies depending on the referral question and complexity of the evaluation. Most assessments involve multiple appointments and may span several weeks from the initial interview to feedback and report completion.

Length of Treatment

Goal-specific treatment can be completed in as few as six sessions, whereas persistent issues could take three to twelve months to resolve.  Those individuals who are willing to utilize therapy as a form of mental fitness may find value in ongoing treatment.  We will work together to create a treatment plan that is evidence-based and right for you.

Therapy is a relational process that allows the client to explore new ways of thinking and feeling in an environment that is safe and inspiring. Therapy feels different for everyone. You should expect your therapist to work with you at your level in a style that feels comfortable and productive for you. Some people enter therapy because there is something about their life or emotional system that needs attention. Others see therapy as a form of mental fitness and attend therapy just like they attend the gym or yoga--as a way to keep their body and mind as healthy as possible.

How long does therapy last?

Therapy is tailored to each individual, and the number of sessions you attend depends on your personal needs. In our first session, I will conduct a clinical assessment and collaborate with you to identify goals, and then evaluate progress throughout treatment. Once you reach your goals, we will discuss your decision to continue or end treatment. Some wish to continue to explore other issues, further personal growth, or continue to strengthen relationships. Others find therapy useful as an additional support and resource in their life. You can decide what works for you.

First Sessions

In our first sessions you will have an opportunity to decide whether I am the right therapist for you. I will assess your goals to assure that I have the resources that you need to accomplish them. If necessary, I will help you find a therapist who is a perfect fit for your specific goals. In our initial session we will preview the therapeutic relationship and develop a treatment path. We will discuss confidentiality, fees, prior engagements with therapy, your history, your present, and your future.
